Stornoway Balti House

Introduction

Soaring customer numbers for Stornoway’s Balti House can mean only one thing – this familyrun restaurant has got its recipe right. Mohammed Ahmed, who manages it, says: “Last year the menu was very good; this year it is excellent!”

A new menu was introduced this spring with around 25 new Bangladeshi dishes included – and even better, more authentic ingredients have been included, with specially matured rice, spices straight from Madras and many other improvements.

Head chef Moksod Ali spent several months in Bangladesh in the winter and came back with all sorts of new ideas to try out – and customers have responded with enthusiasm. “We are getting far more parties in,” says Mohammed. Being a family affair, this has not meant more staff. “They are just having to work harder,” laughs Mohammed.

In addition to the Bangladeshi and Indian dishes, the restaurant also serves a range of European food for those customers who prefer this, particularly if they have come in groups and may wish to stick to omelettes, steaks and chicken and chips.

When the Balti House first opened its doors in 1990, it was simply a takeaway – it was then modified to become a 20 seat restaurant as demand for the meals grew far faster than Mohammeds’s father Aborak Ali had expected and then expanded again in 1996 to seat 48. If customer numbers keep growing, maybe there will be further developments in the future!
